Sure, you can buy the "off-the-shelf" brand and save yourself a bunch of money but what you might get for your efforts is, "Gee, thanks. That's...really nice." And your hopes of buying a great present have just gone down the cologne drain.
But if you really want to get your guy's attention then get him something that he knows is not only from the heart but also from the wallet. That way he will know that he is important and valuable to your and will gladly splash and wear whatever brand you buy.
The added advantage is that you are selecting the fragrance and will appreciate that he's wearing it for you. It's also a great way to "mark your territory" (LOL).
